Diego Maradona’s daughter, Gianinna, said his entourage and medical team had a plan before his death that “went out of control.” This comes as seven medical workers stand trial in Argentina.
Gianinna, 36, spoke to news outlets, including AFP. This was on the sidelines of the negligence trial in San Isidro, near Buenos Aires.
Maradona died in November 2020 at age 60 of heart failure and acute pulmonary oedema. He was recovering at home from surgery for a brain clot.
Prosecutors accuse seven medical workers, including a neurosurgeon, psychiatrist and nurse, of gross negligence in the football star’s death.
The defendants deny responsibility and say the 1986 World Cup winner died of natural causes. They face prison terms of eight to 25 years if convicted.
Gianinna blamed Maradona’s former lawyer and representative, Matias Morla, and former assistant, Maximiliano Pomargo. They are not defendants in the negligence case.
She said Morla held power of attorney over the commercial use of Maradona’s name. She also accused people close to her father of focusing on money rather than his health.

Gianinna said some defendants convinced the family that Maradona should recover at home instead of being admitted to a psychiatric clinic after neurosurgery.
Prosecutors said Maradona was kept in a rented house in Tigre without appropriate medical equipment and sanitation.
Gianinna said she believed all seven defendants were responsible to varying degrees. Furthermore, she named Maradona’s then-personal physician, Leopoldo Luque, as the “main voice” managing his medical team.
