Los Angeles: Mandalorian and Grogu review reactions say the new Star Wars film delivers strong Grogu puppetry but lacks the depth of a full television season.
“The Mandalorian and Grogu” hits theatres on May 22. The film follows Din Djarin, played by Pedro Pascal, and Grogu after Season 3 of “The Mandalorian.”
The story sends the pair on a New Republic bounty mission. Commander Ward, played by Sigourney Weaver, asks them to find Rotta the Hutt, voiced by Jeremy Allen White.
Jon Favreau directed the film and co-wrote it with Dave Filoni and Noah Kloor. The movie keeps the plot self-contained for viewers who have not watched the Disney+ series.
Critics praised the practical puppetry and Grogu’s larger emotional role. However, they said the action often feels flat, and the story repeats basic details too often.
The review says the film gains energy when Din Djarin and Grogu split up around the midpoint. Before that turn, it plays like a serviceable set of television episodes.

The cast also includes Steve Blum as Zeb Orrelios and Paul Sun-Hyung Lee as Carson Teva, and features Martin Scorsese and Matthew Willig.
The Mandalorian and Grogu review frames the movie as a test for Disney and Lucasfilm. It says the story may have worked better with the extra room of a streaming season.
“The Mandalorian and Grogu” drew mixed early reviews, with critics praising Grogu’s puppetry but saying the film feels more like a TV season than a major Star Wars movie.
