The Luka Doncic injury update Lakers fans feared has become the biggest storyline ahead of Los Angeles’ first-round playoff series against the Houston Rockets. While the Lakers finished the regular season strongly, concerns about the fitness of Doncic and Austin Reaves have raised fresh questions about the team’s chances in the West.
The Lakers closed the regular season at 53-29, good for fourth place in the Western Conference. However, their playoff outlook has changed because Doncic is dealing with a Grade 2 left hamstring strain, an injury that kept him out of the final games of the regular season.
Sports doctor Jesse Morse said Doncic’s return may take longer than many expected. He reportedly said the star guard returned to Los Angeles after beginning treatment in Spain, but still needs more recovery time.
Morse added that Doncic “realistically needs at least another 10 days,” warning that an early return could bring serious risk. That assessment has intensified concern around whether the Lakers will have one of their top offensive creators available at the start of the Houston series.

The numbers in the report underline his importance. During Doncic’s absence this season, the Lakers went 10-8 and averaged 114.4 points per game. The report says the team performs better with him on the floor, reinforcing his value to the offence.
Even so, Los Angeles still has LeBron James to lead the team. The Lakers have shown they can remain competitive, but the margin for error clearly shrinks without Doncic and Reaves fully available.

With the Rockets series about to begin, getting Doncic back quickly would lift both morale and offensive production. Still, the bigger question is whether bringing him back too soon could hurt the Lakers later in the postseason.
The report suggests waiting may be the wiser decision if Los Angeles wants Doncic at full strength for the rest of the playoffs. That approach could give the Lakers a better chance of having their star guard in the form needed to influence the series — and potentially the wider Western Conference race.
