The Boston Marathon 2026 winners delivered a memorable and record-breaking day as Kenya’s John Korir and Sharon Lokedi claimed the men’s and women’s titles in dominant style. Korir shattered the men’s course record in 2:01:52, while Lokedi defended her crown in 2:18:51 on a chilly day, helped by a strong tailwind.
Korir’s victory was the fastest men’s finish in the race’s 130-year history. His 2:01:52 run broke Geoffrey Mutai’s 2011 course record of 2:03:02 by 70 seconds and ranked as the fifth-fastest marathon ever recorded, according to AP’s race report.
The Kenyan star took control around the 20-mile mark and ran alone over the closing miles. He later said he knew he was on a strong pace, but only realised he had broken the course record after Boston Athletic Association president Jack Fleming told him at the finish.
Korir was not the only runner rewriting the record books. AP reported that the top three men all finished faster than the previous course record, underlining how quick the race became in favourable conditions. Before crossing the line, Korir smiled and celebrated after a final mile of 4:26. His win also completed a second straight Boston title, confirming his place among the event’s standout recent champions.
Lokedi again proved too strong in the women’s field, winning in 2:18:51. That made her a back-to-back Boston champion, although her time stayed behind the 2:17:22 course record she set in 2025. With about five miles left, Lokedi pulled away from fellow Kenyan Loice Chemnung with a sharp late surge. According to the race coverage, her finishing burst decided the contest and completed a Kenyan sweep of the top spots.
The record-breaking day extended beyond the winners. Jess McClain finished fifth in 2:20:49, the fastest Boston Marathon ever run by an American woman, while Zouhair Talbi posted the fastest Boston time by an American man with 2:03:45.
Cold temperatures around 45F and a tailwind of up to 10 mph helped create ideal racing conditions. Those factors, combined with aggressive pacing, turned the 2026 race into one of the fastest Boston Marathons ever seen.
