Karachi water shortfall reached 54 million gallons per day on Sunday after a K-Electric main cable fault disrupted power supply to a key pumping station, KWSC said.
The Karachi Water and Sewerage Corporation said electricity supply to the North East Karachi Pumping Station was suspended at 3:27 am. The fault disrupted operations at K-II Pumping Station and partially disrupted the city’s water supply.
A KWSC spokesperson said that after being contacted, K-Electric’s technical team reached the site and assessed the fault.
KWSC said it made emergency alternative arrangements to restore supply. Backfeed was provided to the K-II pumping station through the K-III feeder.
Power supply was partially restored at 5:50 am. However, KWSC said that pumping operations could not resume in full due to limited electrical capacity.

The spokesperson warned that water shortages could increase if K-Electric did not fix the fault immediately and permanently. The disruption may also affect supply schedules in different parts of Karachi.
KWSC said the temporary arrangement would continue until K-Electric fully repaired the cable fault and restored normal power supply.
The corporation urged K-Electric to restore power on an emergency basis to prevent further disruption for residents.
KWSC said it was monitoring the situation and using available resources to restore normal water supply across Karachi.
