Israel has confirmed a $3 billion acquisition of a third squadron of F-35 stealth fighter jets from the United States manufactured by Lockheed Martin.
Defense Minister Yoav Gallant emphasized the strategic importance of the purchase, stating, “At a time when some of our adversaries aim to undermine our ties with our greatest ally, we only further strengthen our alliance.” He highlighted that this move sends a strong signal to regional adversaries.
The addition will increase Israel’s total F-35 fleet to 75 aircraft, with deliveries occurring at a rate of three to five jets annually starting in 2028. Israel remains the only country in the Middle East equipped with these advanced fighters capable of stealth operations, deep strikes into enemy territory, and intelligence gathering. Notably, Israel was the first nation to use F-35s in combat operations, beginning in 2018.
The strategic expansion comes amid ongoing regional tensions, including extensive military operations by Israel in neighbouring Syria, targeting primarily Iran-backed forces and Lebanese Hezbollah, as well as the Syrian army. Furthermore, in April, amidst the conflict with Hamas, Iran launched its first direct assault on Israel, employing over 300 drones and missiles.
