Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi and Foreign Minister Hossein Amirabdollahian were tragically killed in a helicopter crash, as reported by Mehr news agency on Monday. Following the discovery of the wreckage, an Iranian official expressed that the likelihood of survival for both leaders seemed remote.
“The helicopter carrying President Raisi was entirely consumed by fire, leading to fears that all aboard have perished,” the official informed Reuters.
Rescue teams battled severe blizzards and challenging terrain throughout the night. They reached the crash site in East Azerbaijan province during the early hours of Monday.
“The wreckage is visible, and the prospects appear grim,” stated Pirhossein Kolivand, head of Iran’s Red Crescent, on state television.
Since his election in 2021, President Raisi, 63, has implemented strict morality laws, managed severe responses to protests, and vigorously engaged in nuclear discussions.
A Turkish drone located a heat signature believed to be the crash site’s wreckage, sharing the coordinates with Iranian officials, reported Anadolu news agency. IRNA confirmed that Raisi was aboard a U.S.-manufactured Bell 212 helicopter.
Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, Iran’s Supreme Leader, reassured the public, affirming no disruption to governmental functions.
The Iranian military’s chief of staff mobilized all resources for the search and rescue efforts.
The national broadcaster paused regular shows, broadcasting nationwide prayers for Raisi instead.
According to a regional army commander quoted by state media, a rescue team worked tirelessly in a stark landscape marked by cold, rain, and fog. “We are meticulously scanning every inch of the crash area, where conditions are worsening.”
Countries worldwide have expressed their concerns and offered help.
The White House announced that President Joe Biden is updated on the crash. China and the European Union have also shown deep concern, with the latter offering satellite technology for the rescue efforts.
On Sunday, Raisi was at the Azerbaijani border to inaugurate the Qiz-Qalasi Dam. After a recent meeting with Raisi, Azerbaijan’s President Ilham Aliyev has offered to help with the rescue operations.
