A FIFA Iran Flag Row has emerged before the 2026 World Cup. Iranian opponents of the Islamic Republic are challenging possible limits on the historic lion-and-sun flag.
FIFA says World Cup stadium rules bar political flags, banners and symbols. The body says the policy protects neutrality in football venues.
Opponents of Iran’s government say the rule favours Tehran’s post-1979 official flag. They argue it treats the older lion-and-sun banner as a political symbol.
Iran used the lion-and-sun emblem before the 1979 revolution. Many Iranians abroad still view it as a national symbol outside the Islamic Republic.
The dispute follows similar reports from the 2022 World Cup in Qatar. Some Iranian fans said officials there restricted the display of the flag and protest-related symbols.
The issue now reaches beyond stadium access. Some members of the Iranian diaspora have reassessed Team Melli following the Women, Life, Freedom movement.

Iranian opponents quoted by Iran International said the team no longer represents all Iranians. They said state use of football and official symbols makes neutrality difficult.
Some legal and civil groups are exploring challenges to possible restrictions. World Cup venues under FIFA control still operate under tournament rules.
