Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) founder Imran Khan reportedly laughed upon hearing his conviction in the £190 million corruption case, according to his sister, Aleema Khan, who spoke to the media outside a Lahore court on Saturday.
Aleema Khan disclosed that Imran Khan laughed upon hearing the verdict of his corruption case, saying, “We have entrusted our matter to Allah.” This statement followed the accountability court’s decision to sentence the former prime minister and his wife, Bushra Bibi, in the Al-Qadir Trust case. Authorities have detained Imran Khan, 72, since August 2023, and he faces approximately 200 charges. He received a 14-year sentence, while Bushra Bibi received seven years.
Imran Khan has consistently claimed that his conviction is a scheme to oust him from politics. His party echoes this view and insists that political motives drive the accusations. This conviction came during PTI’s discussions with the government to reduce political tensions, including meetings with key figures like General Asim Munir, the Chief of Army Staff.
Imran Khan declared in court, “I will neither make any deal nor seek any relief.” The trial, held at Adiala Jail, ,where he is detained, resulted in his conviction for corruption linked to the Al-Qadir Trust, a charity established by him and his wife.
Aleema Khan is confident that a higher court will overturn the verdict, criticizing the current judicial system and clarifying that the government controls the disputed £190 million, not Imran Khan.
In contrast, Federal Minister for Information Ataullah Tarar insisted that Imran Khan’s conviction was justified, describing the case as “open-and-shut.” He criticized Imran Khan for lacking solid evidence and the politicized defence strategy, stating that the court’s ruling was based on firm facts.
