ICC Fines Pakistani Players Fined for Code Violation in Tri-Nation Series

In a high-stakes game in Karachi, Pakistan won against South Africa, chasing a formidable target of 353 runs. The match concluded with standout performances by Mohammad Rizwan and Salman Agha, who scored 122 and 134, respectively, leading Pakistan to victory with an over to spare. However, the match wasn’t just about the scores.

The victory was overshadowed by controversial celebrations from several Pakistani players, including Shaheen Afridi, Saud Shakeel, and substitute fielder Kamran Ghulam. Their aggressive actions towards South African batters caught the attention of social media and the International Cricket Council (ICC).

The ICC has responded by fining the three involved players for breaches of Level 1 of the ICC Code of Conduct. Shaheen Afridi faced a 25% match fee deduction for inappropriate physical contact, an incident that occurred during the 28th over when he obstructed Matthew Breetzke, leading to a physical and verbal altercation.

Saud Shakeel and Kamran Ghulam each received a 10% fine for their excessively close celebrations following Temba Bavuma’s run-out in the 29th over. These actions were deemed to provoke an aggressive reaction, violating Article 2.5 of the ICC Code.

In addition to monetary penalties, each player received one demerit point on their disciplinary records. Notably, this was the first offence for all three players within 24 months. All involved have accepted their sanctions, negating the need for formal hearings.

This incident underscores the intense emotions in competitive sports and highlights the need for sportsmanship and respect among international athletes. As Pakistan celebrates its win, these sanctions remind us of the behavioural standards expected in international cricket.
