Unidentified gunmen Wednesday shot dead a human rights advocate who was defending a university lecturer accused of blasphemy.
“Rashid Rehman and two of his associates were shot several times after armed men forced into his chamber, located on Kachchehri Road. All three of them sustained multiple bullet wounds” a police official said.
His two friends are out of danger.
According to sources, he was continuously receiving death threats for the last two months.
Rehman was representing Junaid Hafeez, a lecturer at Bahauddin Zakariya University, accused of allegedly making derogatory remarks against the Prophet Mohammed (PBUH) in March last year.
“During the hearing the lawyers of the complainant told Rehman that he wouldn’t be present at the next hearing as he would not be alive,” said the HRCP in a statement issued after the incident in March.
