Hasan Nawaz, the son of former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif and current President of the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N), has been declared bankrupt by the London High Court.

The UK Gazette, the official public record of the United Kingdom, reported the declaration of bankruptcy in a case involving the UK’s Tax and Revenue Department. The court issued this decision on April 29, 2024, under case number 694 of 2023, following a filing on August 25, 2023.

Sources close to Hasan Nawaz disclosed that his legal team rigorously examines the case details and intends to challenge the court’s decision soon. Her Majesty’s Revenue and Customs (HMRC) initiated the civil case against Hasan Nawaz, with Kaur Maxwell providing legal representation.

Barrister Gul Nawaz Khan, a British legal expert, clarified the proceedings. He noted, “Government intervention occurs when an individual fails to settle their dues. If no agreement is reached, the matter escalates to court.” He also discussed the severe repercussions of bankruptcy, explaining, “A bankrupt individual is barred from serving as a company director and will face significant obstacles in obtaining future loans.”

Following this ruling, Hasan Nawaz is now ineligible to hold any company directorial positions. This news emerged just as Nawaz Sharif, Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz, and others departed for Pakistan. After a brief visit to the US following his arrival in the UK on October 26, Nawaz Sharif returned to London from Europe with his daughter on November 12.
