Berlin: German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul told Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi on Sunday that Iran must renounce nuclear weapons. He also said Iran must immediately reopen the Strait of Hormuz.
Wadephul said in a post on X that Germany supported a negotiated solution. However, he added that Germany shared the United States’ goal, according to the source material.
The German minister said Iran must “completely and verifiably” renounce nuclear weapons and reopen the waterway. In doing so, he echoed demands by US Secretary of State Marco Rubio.
The call came amid a fragile ceasefire following the US-Israeli war on Iran. At the same time, there were continued diplomatic efforts to prevent renewed escalation.
Germany has expressed concern over the closure of the Strait of Hormuz. This is a key maritime route for about one-fifth of global oil supplies.
Araghchi has previously said Iran remains open to dialogue but approaches negotiations with “complete distrust” of Washington.

Wadhafal has also urged Iran to send a delegation to the planned negotiations in Islamabad. Mediators seek movement on the conflict.
