The fisheries department has directed fishermen along the coastal belt of Balochistan not to venture out to sea on March 5 and 6 in view of widespread torrential rains and high winds that are expected in the province.
Director fisheries Noor Mohammad told the media that the advisory was issued in wake of the heavy rains, which have lashed most parts of Balochistan this week.
The torrential rains have caused power outages and suspension of internet and phone services in several districts of the province, while Quetta itself faced a flood-like situation due to the dilapidated condition of the provincial capital’s sewerage system.
Torrential rains compounded the problems of citizens in general and the students taking their examinations in particular in Quetta.
“Our school is shelterless and our rooms are always flooded with rain water,” a school teacher who declined to be named since he was not authorised to speak to media told the media.
The teacher added that the students were later shifted to another place for taking their exam.
“Where are their [authorities’] claims of educational emergency and providing better facilities,” said Javed, a student at the school.
He lamented that all the students were facing difficulties in taking their exams with the halls flooded with rain water.
Over 40 schools in Quetta are running in rented buildings. The schools are in an extremely poor condition, sources in the provincial education department stated.
Despite tall claims and promises, the state of government-run schools in Balochistan remains dismal.
