Senator Shaukat Tarin, a former finance minister has been charged with sedition by the Federal Investigation Agency’s (FIA) Cybercrime Wing for allegedly sabotaging discussions between Pakistan and the International Monetary Fund (IMF).
The former finance minister was accused under the Pakistan Electronic Crimes Act due to a purported audio leak that circulated online (PECA).
According to Arshad Mehmood’s first information report (FIR), the audio leak was motivated by malice. Accordingly, sections of provocation and sedition have been added to the FIR.
Following an interior ministry request, the coalition government granted the FIA permission to hold the former finance minister a day earlier.
The FIA concluded its probe of Tarin and his leaked audio recordings that referenced the former Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa finance ministers.
After the alleged phone conversations between Tarin and the two provincial finance ministers surfaced last year and the government and the PTI engaged in a verbal battle over whether or not the PTI was attempting to jeopardize the IMF agreement in the wake of the devastating floods, the federal investigating authority launched an investigation into the matter.
