Interior Minister Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan on Wednesday said the senior retired army officers should be very careful while making statements regarding issues of national security in the backdrop of sensitive situation in the country.
Responding to a question about the statement of former Director General ISPR Major General (R) Athar Abbas, the Interior Minister said wisdom and prudence demand that those people who were involved in important decisions should be cautious as it would be good for the nation and country.
Talking to the BBC, Abbas said that former army chief Ashfaq Parvaz Kayani was hesitant in launching an operation in North Waziristan three years ago. He said that preparations were made for one year to launch the offensive, but it was scaled back over Kayani’s hesitance.
“In this age of media, any little slip of tongue can create an adverse situation,” Nisar opined.
At this stage of history, bringing into open decisions of the current or former leadership of military in this way can create difficulties but cannot be helpful in providing solution, he said.
The interior minister appealed to the media to show restraint in making this statement a topic of discussion at a time when Pakistan badly needs unity.
