Emirates has achieved a significant milestone by becoming the first airline in the world to operate an Airbus A380 demonstration flight entirely on 100% Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF).

The groundbreaking flight, which took off from Dubai International Airport (DXB), utilized SAF in one of its four engines, showcasing the fuel’s viability as a sustainable alternative that meets traditional jet fuel’s technical and chemical requirements.

The successful demonstration flight of the A380 using SAF is a step forward in reducing carbon emissions in aviation. Compared to conventional jet fuel, SAF can reduce carbon emissions by up to 85%* over its lifecycle. Such demonstration flights are crucial for future standardization, qualification, and 100% SAF flying adoption. They are instrumental as governments and industry stakeholders work together to support the production and scale-up of SAF.

The Emirates A380 demonstration flight underscores the performance and compatibility of SAF as a safe and reliable fuel source. It contributes significantly to the industry’s ongoing research into the effects of 100% SAF on aircraft performance.

The flight coincides with the convergence of the aviation industry, international organizations, regulatory bodies, and policymakers in Dubai for the Third International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) Conference on Aviation and Alternative Fuels (CAAF/3).

The inaugural use of drop-in SAF on an A380 aircraft, particularly in the Engine Alliance GP7200 engine, while maintaining conventional jet fuel in the other three engines, demonstrates full compatibility with existing aircraft systems and highlights the aviation industry’s commitment to sustainable practices.
