Elon Musk, CEO of Tesla and Space X, who acquired Twitter. It rebranded it as “X” and is contemplating another monumental shift within the platform, which revolves around imposing a nominal daily fee on its users.

Before finalizing his acquisition of the popular social media platform, Musk had hinted at impending alterations. Now, the tech magnate is contemplating introducing a user fee of less than 25 cents per day to enhance the quality and sustainability of the platform.

Harnessing the Power of “X”: Aiming to Curtail Misinformation

As reported by Bloomberg’s Dave Lee, Musk is considering reintroducing a concept he had previously broached privately: imposing a minor charge on all users to access “X”. This move, touted as a lower-tier premium, would be aimed at not only generating revenue but also combating bots and misinformation prevalent on the platform.

In a conversation with Benjamin Netanyahu, Musk mentioned, “We are considering a small monthly fee for accessing the X system,” envisioning it as a strategy to identify and eliminate bot activity. Musk perceives this step as potentially pivotal in transforming the platform, which some critics label as a breeding ground for hate speech and misinformation since its acquisition in 2022.

Drawing on an earlier discourse, a 2022 article by Casey Newton highlighted the likelihood of Musk implementing a payment scheme for using “X”. Although this initiative might face initial hiccups, given that the existing premium version, “Blue”, garnered a modest user base exceeding 100,000 active subscribers.

Amid these developments, there have been suggestions from various quarters to impose a higher fee on business accounts, offering them exclusive features to extend their reach. However, this proposal did not gain traction.

Musk, citing a drastic plunge in advertisement revenues by 50% since assuming control, views the introduction of a 23-cent daily charge as a necessary step to restore the platform’s financial health, making it accessible for the average user while maintaining its efficacy and reach.
