WHO declared the outbreak a Public Health Emergency of International Concern on May 17, 2026. Ebola usually begins with fever, weakness, muscle pain, headache and sore throat.
Later, patients may suffer vomiting, diarrhoea, rash, kidney and liver damage. Some cases also involve internal or external bleeding.
The virus spreads through direct contact with blood, bodily fluids or tissues from infected people or animals. Therefore, healthcare workers and close contacts face higher risk during outbreaks.
