A catastrophic landslide in Yunnan province, China, has resulted in the death of at least eight people, with dozens more still missing. The landslide struck early Monday morning, affecting two villages in the southwestern city of Zhaotong.
Rescue Efforts Amidst Harsh Conditions
China Central Television (CCTV) reported that around 47 individuals from 18 households were missing following the landslide. By Monday afternoon, Zhaotong Daily confirmed the death of eight people. Rescue operations are ongoing in challenging conditions, with snow and freezing temperatures complicating efforts.
According to the National Health Commission, two additional individuals have been hospitalized with head and body injuries. The landslide buried houses under a thick layer of soil, leaving many trapped. A witness, identified only as Mr. Gu, recounted the terrifying moment, noting that four of his relatives were among those buried.
Firefighters and rescue teams search for survivors through the rubble in light snow. The cause of the landslide is still unclear. In response to the disaster, China deployed nearly 1,000 rescue workers and about 200 rescue vehicles. Chinese Vice Premier Zhang Guoqing is leading a workgroup to oversee and guide the rescue operations.
