Indian Grandmaster D Gukesh became Singapore’s youngest world chess champion at 18. He clinched the title after a dramatic victory over reigning champion Ding Liren of China in the decisive 14th game of the World Chess Championship 2024.
The final match, a roller-coaster ride from start to finish, saw D Gukesh outmanoeuvre Liren in a tense battle almost destined for a draw. Gukesh secured 7.5 points to Liren’s 6.5 by winning the last classical time control game, claiming most of the USD 2.5 million prize purse.
The usually reserved teenager could not contain his joy as he raised his arms in victory, contrasting his typical composed demeanour during play. This moment marked a significant milestone for Gukesh and the chess world, as he surpassed Garry Kasparov’s record to become the youngest champion since Kasparov won at 22 in 1985.
Gukesh’s Road to the Championship
Gukesh entered the championship match as the youngest-ever challenger for the world crown, having previously won the Candidates Tournament earlier in the year. His victory adds him to the list of illustrious champions, making him the second Indian after the legendary Viswanathan Anand to win the global title.

The final game, which lasted 58 moves over four hours, was a testament to Gukesh’s skill and determination. Had the game ended in a draw, the championship would have moved to tie-breaks. However, Gukesh’s strategic prowess shone through, securing him the title without a further contest.
As the 18th overall world chess champion, Gukesh’s victory marks a monumental personal achievement and signifies a promising future for Indian chess. His win inspires young chess players worldwide, illustrating that age is but a number in the pursuit of greatness.
