Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) Chairman Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari launched a scathing critique of Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) leader Nawaz Sharif, accusing the thrice-elected former prime minister of seeking a fourth term through “selection.”
Addressing a political gathering in Lower Dir, Bilawal remarked, “Mian sahib, you have been ‘selected’ three times. This time, aim to be ‘elected’ for your fourth tenure.”
As Pakistan’s political atmosphere heats up with the general elections scheduled for February 8 next year, the PPP and the PML-N, once allies, are now engaging in a verbal showdown. The PPP accuses the PML-N of receiving preferential treatment, alleging an uneven playing field in the election process.
Bilawal urged Nawaz Sharif to engage in politics that respects the sanctity of the vote, warning that neither he nor the public would accept a “selected” ruler. He also criticized Nawaz’s attempts to become the prime minister for a fourth time, questioning the impact of his return to power after three failed terms.
Bilawal’s Comments on Nawaz’s Political Journey
Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari remarked on Nawaz Sharif’s political journey, highlighting his involvement in “revenge politics” and aspirations to become ‘Amir ul Momineen’ in his second term. He also commented on Nawaz’s oustings during his previous terms, including his final exit leading to his stay in Avenfield apartments.
Bilawal mocked Nawaz’s aspiration for a two-thirds majority in the upcoming elections and simultaneously criticized Imran Khan, former chairman of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), stating that Pakistan cannot afford a “player” or a politician like Nawaz amid the current economic challenges.
Emphasizing the need for “new politics,” Bilawal warned of Nawaz reverting to his old ways if elected a fourth time. He concluded by criticizing Imran Khan’s tenure, focusing on the politics of revenge and selection.
