Apple Inc has purchased Mira, a Los Angeles-based AR startup specializing in producing headsets for various companies and the U.S. military. This move follows the recent unveiling of Apple’s new premium augmented reality headset, the Vision Pro, which marks one of the company’s most ambitious endeavors since the launch of the iPhone.

Apple’s foray into the augmented reality market, currently dominated by Meta Platforms, will test the appetite of consumers who have yet to embrace such devices fully. Apple has reportedly brought at least 11 of Mira’s staff on board as part of this acquisition.
The Verge also reported that Mira’s contracts with the military included a modest agreement with the U.S. Air Force and a more substantial $702,351 contract with the Navy. Apple confirmed the acquisition in a statement, reiterating its standard policy of acquiring smaller tech firms without disclosing specific intentions or plans. Representatives from Apple and Mira, including Mira CEO Ben Taft, have yet to respond to requests for comment.
