During the ongoing Lok Sabha elections in India, a physical altercation involving YSRCP assembly member Shiva Kumar and a voter named Goti Makla Sudhakar at a polling station in Andhra Pradesh has sparked widespread attention during the fourth phase of the elections, was captured on video and has circulated heavily on social media.
The confrontation began around 10 a.m. when Sudhakar accused Kumar and his family members of cutting in line at the polling station. After voting, when Kumar returned, Sudhakar confronted him about his actions, which escalated into a physical altercation initiated by Kumar. In response, local authorities have registered a case against Shiva Kumar under sections 341 and 323 for assaulting Sudhakar.
TDP President N. Chandrababu Naidu has publicly condemned the incident, suggesting that it reflects the YSRCP’s desperation. He criticized Kumar’s behaviour as an assault on public consciousness and indicative of a broader dissatisfaction with the government’s performance over the past five years.
As of May 13, the fourth phase of India’s general elections is underway, with citizens voting for 96 parliament members across nine states and occupied Kashmir. The principal contest is between the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party, led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, and the Indian National Developmental Inclusive Alliance, spearheaded by Congress under Rahul Gandhi.
The election is particularly significant in occupied Kashmir, where it marks the first vote for many young people since the controversial revocation of Article 370 in 2019, which ended the region’s special status. Local leaders like former Chief Minister Omar Abdullah encourage the youth to express dissent and stress the unacceptability of revoking their special status.
