LOS ANGELES: 8 Actors who left Hollywood on their own terms include Greta Garbo, Grace Kelly, Shirley Temple, Michael Schoeffling, Phoebe Cates, Alison Lohman, Bridget Fonda and Leelee Sobieski.
Garbo stopped making films after 1941’s “Two-Faced Woman” and spent the rest of her life outside Hollywood. She later told journalist Sven Broman she was tired of the industry and wanted another life.
Kelly left films at 26 after winning the Best Actress Oscar for “The Country Girl” and starring in Alfred Hitchcock films. She married Prince Rainier III of Monaco in 1956 and never returned to screen acting.
Temple retired from films at 22 after appearing in more than 40 movies from childhood. She later served as a U.S. delegate to the United Nations and as U.S. ambassador to Ghana and Czechoslovakia.
Schoeffling, known for playing Jake Ryan in “Sixteen Candles,” left acting after 1991’s “Wild Hearts Can’t Be Broken.” He moved to rural Pennsylvania and opened a handcrafted furniture business.
Cates, known for “Fast Times at Ridgemont High” and “Gremlins,” stepped away after “The Anniversary Party.” She later opened Blue Tree, a Madison Avenue boutique, in 2005.
Lohman left a 2000s run that included “White Oleander,” “Matchstick Men,” “Big Fish” and “Drag Me to Hell.” She later raised a family and became an acting coach.

Fonda stepped out of public life after a 2003 car accident and her marriage to composer Danny Elfman.
Sobieski shifted from acting to family life and visual art after roles in “Eyes Wide Shut” and “Joan of Arc.”
