ISLAMABAD: Abdul Sattar Edhi was honoured on Wednesday by President Asif Ali Zardari and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on his 10th death anniversary.
The President and Prime Minister described Edhi as an embodiment of compassion, selfless service and humanity.
The leaders said Pakistan was remembering a man who devoted his life to helping people on low incomes, the abandoned and vulnerable communities, according to official messages issued on July 8.
President Zardari said Edhi’s service rose above caste, creed and religion. He said true greatness was measured through service to humanity.
Zardari said the Edhi Foundation had built a comprehensive social care network, including the world’s largest volunteer ambulance service.
He said the foundation’s shelters, orphanages and free meal kitchens became sanctuaries for homeless and destitute people.
The president called Edhi an enduring symbol of national pride and prayed for his highest place in Jannah.
