Asia Markets Fall as KOSPI Drops 5.81%, Nikkei 4.15%

Asian markets fell broadly, led by a 5.81% drop in South Korea’s KOSPI Composite Index and a 4.15% fall in Japan’s Nikkei 225.

The KOSPI posted the steepest decline among the listed regional benchmarks. It fell 519.09 points to 8,411.21.

Japan’s Nikkei 225 recorded the second-largest loss. It dropped 3,005.46 points to 69,360.88.

China’s SSE Composite Index fell 93.02 points, or 2.26%, to 4,027.27. Hong Kong’s Hang Seng Index lost 405.05 points, or 1.76%, to 22,671.86. The Asia Dow slipped 66.05 points, or 1.04%, to 6,311.60.

Australia’s S&P/ASX 200 was the only listed equity benchmark to close higher. It rose 15.50 points, or 0.18%, to 8,764.20.

Currency movement was narrower than the equity losses. USD/JPY edged down 0.0920, or 0.06%, to 161.6850.

Heavier selling in East Asian equities, with South Korea and Japan leading regional losses. Australia’s small gain stood apart from declines across the other listed benchmarks.
