X, formerly known as Twitter, may be integrating a ‘dislike’ button as part of its features on the iOS app, characterized by a heartbroken emoji icon. This development, reported by users who found code references in the app, suggests that X continues to test new ways to interact with posts, particularly by allowing downvotes.
Testing New Engagement Features on X
Reports indicate that X is exploring user engagement through a dislike option, first noted in a 2021 experiment and now visible in app code as a heartbroken emoji. This feature diverges from traditional downvote icons like those used on Reddit. The feature, initially tested on replies, may now extend to all posts, though this has not been confirmed.
@aaronp613 on X highlighted the potential upcoming feature, sharing code snippets that suggest users might soon have the option to express disapproval for posts. The snippets include prompts such as “Do you want to downvote this post?” and “Downvote this post,” indicating a possible rollout.
In 2021, X announced a small-scale experiment to test downvotes and upvotes on replies, aiming to enhance the quality of interactions. While downvotes were not visible to other users, upvotes appeared like likes. Recently, the visibility of likes has been concealed following changes under Musk’s leadership that aim to revamp user interaction on the platform.
Another user, @P4mui, shared a video demonstrating the downvote feature, though it seems to apply only to replies, not original posts. This limitation suggests the feature’s scope might still be under consideration.
Changes to Visibility Features
Alongside the potential dislike feature, X has recently implemented changes that affect visibility across the platform. Users’ liked posts are no longer displayed in their profiles, indicating a shift towards more private interactions. This change has been introduced since Musk acquired the platform in 2022, signalling a significant transformation in how users engage with content on X.
