Arshad Nadeem achieved a historic milestone as the first Pakistani athlete to secure an individual Olympic gold medal in javelin throw at the Paris Olympics 2024. With a remarkable 92.97m throw, he broke the Olympic record and surpassed Neeraj Chopra, whose throw of 89.45m won him silver.
Initially aspiring to be a cricketer, Arshad had to redirect his sports career due to financial constraints. His brother, Shahid, revealed that their father, a construction worker, was the sole earner for their family of nine, making cricket an expensive sport unaffordable for them.
Shahid, who participated in athletics during his school days, influenced Arshad’s early exposure to various sports. A school teacher’s advice led Arshad to focus specifically on the javelin throw.
Recognizing his exceptional achievement, the government will honour Arshad with the Hilal-e-Imtiaz, the nation’s second-highest award. Additionally, to commemorate his victory, a special stamp titled ‘Azm-e-Istehkam’ (commitment to stability) will be released on the upcoming 77th Independence Day.
As reported by state media, President Asif Ali Zardari has initiated the formal process to confer this award, acknowledging Arshad’s contribution to elevating Pakistan’s status on the global sports stage.
At 27 years old, Arshad Nadeem’s performance surpassed the previous Olympic record of 90.57m set in 2008 and marked the country’s first individual gold in four decades.
