Warner Bros. has set 2026 as the release year for the much-anticipated new Lord of the Rings movie. Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav revealed this during a post-earnings call, as reported by Deadline.
The project is in its early script development stages. Andy Serkis will direct the upcoming series in collaboration with Warner Bros. Pictures’ executives Pam Abdy and Mike De Luca.
Last year, Zaslav announced that Abdy and De Luca would spearhead the development of new films based on J.R.R. Tolkien’s iconic books.
While specific plot details remain under wraps, Zaslav noted that the first film would explore new storylines not previously depicted.
Furthermore, Charlotte Brandstrom, director of the “Lord of the Rings” prequel series “The Rings of Power,” indicated in January that the show’s second season would adopt a darker tone than the first. “The Rings of Power” is set thousands of years before Tolkien’s novels depict the mythical Middle-earth. This universe has been famously translated into a series of blockbuster films.
