ISLAMABAD: The Federal Investigation Agency established an FIA crypto unit to investigate money laundering, terrorism financing, cybercrime and financial fraud involving cryptocurrency, agency officials said.
The agency created the Cryptocurrency Investigation Unit on the instructions of the FIA Director General, according to the officials. The unit will also monitor suspicious transactions conducted through digital assets.
FIA officials said investigators would use modern technology to trace cryptocurrency-linked financial activity and conduct inquiries in line with international standards.
The specialised unit will examine cases involving digital-asset scams, online financial fraud and the alleged use of cryptocurrency to move illicit funds, the officials added.

The FIA said it would introduce measures to prevent the misuse of cryptocurrency and pursue legal action against offenders. The agency described the unit as part of its effort to strengthen Pakistan’s response to technology-enabled financial crime.
The development comes as Pakistan moves towards formal licensing and supervision of cryptocurrency exchanges and other virtual-asset service providers.
The FIA did not disclose the unit’s staffing strength, leadership structure, operational start date or the number of cryptocurrency-related cases currently under investigation.
