Shaquille O’Neal believes LeBron James will choose a championship contender as the four-time NBA champion considers the final move of his playing career.
O’Neal made the prediction in an interview with PEOPLE at Fanatics Fest on July 17 while promoting his professional dunk competition, DUNKMAN. He said James had earned the right to decide his future without advice from other former players.
The former Los Angeles Lakers centre described James as being “in the room” with players who have won multiple championships. He said that status allowed the 41-year-old to trust his own judgement.

O’Neal expects James to prioritise another title opportunity because he may have only “one, two, maybe three more years” remaining in the NBA. He also praised James for maintaining his body well enough to prepare for a record 24th season.
James has not announced his next team after ending an eight-season spell with the Los Angeles Lakers. The Cleveland Cavaliers, Golden State Warriors, Philadelphia 76ers and Miami Heat have featured among the destinations linked with him in recent coverage.
O’Neal said basketball fit would not be the only consideration, but he expected James’ remaining career window to push him towards a roster capable of competing immediately.
