As NBA commissioner Adam Silver approached the Barclays Center lectern on Thursday night, anticipation filled the room.
The expectation was indeed confirmed, as French prodigy Victor Wembanyama was declared the first overall pick by the San Antonio Spurs. Wembanyama, the third player in the franchise’s history to receive the honor, follows the legendary big men David Robinson (1987) and Tim Duncan (1997) and is poised to launch San Antonio into a fresh era of competition.
Wembanyama’s Rise to the Top
Hailing from Northern France, Victor Wembanyama was born into a family of athletes, each towering over six feet in height. His older sister Eve has a professional basketball career; their grandparents were also enthusiasts.
At just nine years old, Wembanyama already stood at 5’11”, which led him to Barcelona’s basketball team. He debuted professionally as a mere 15-year-old, joining ASVEL in France’s premier basketball league in 2021. His exceptional performance earned him the LNB Pro A league title in his debut season, and he switched to Metropolitans 92 in the following season. He was subsequently honored as the league’s MVP.
Wembanyama has been on the scouts’ radar for years, standing out with his exceptional size, athleticism, vision, and shooting skills. Even before the Spurs secured the NBA draft lottery last month, he was touted as the unanimous #1 pick.
San Antonio Spurs and Legacy
Interestingly, the Spurs have a history of drafting promising centers as their top pick. They selected David Robinson in 1987 but had to wait two years as he completed his military service. Robinson, who played his entire 15-year career with the Spurs, clinched two championships and an MVP award, eventually earning his place in the Hall of Fame.
Tim Duncan, chosen as the Spurs’ #1 overall in 1997, teamed up with Robinson to create a formidable duo. Duncan became one of the finest interior players the NBA has ever seen, winning four championships.
As Wembanyama embarks on his NBA journey, he will reportedly receive guidance from Duncan. With such mentorship, it’s hard to envision anything less than a spectacular career for this young talent.
