The 2026 U.S. Open first round at Shinnecock Hills Golf Club was suspended for two hours Thursday after dense fog disrupted play shortly after the opening tee shot.
Officials sounded the horn at 7:05 a.m. ET after visibility worsened. Only 14 of 156 players had completed one hole when play stopped, and no birdies were on the scoreboard.
Play resumed at 9:05 a.m. ET. The U.S. Open’s X account announced the restart and said the practice grounds were open in the morning.
Players still faced weather concerns after the restart. The National Weather Service indicated a 40% chance of precipitation and possible thunderstorms, with gusts up to 30 mph.
The previous U.S. Open first-round fog delay came in 2021 at Torrey Pines, according to the source report. That suspension lasted 90 minutes.
