US government workers, already facing disruption under President Donald Trump’s chaotic return to power, are now contending with a new challenge: Elon Musk’s demand for job justifications.
On Monday, many federal employees must submit a work summary by 11:59 PM Eastern time (9:59 AM PKT) in response to Musk’s directive. This unprecedented request has created division within the Trump administration.
Some agencies, including the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) and the Federal Communications Commission (FCC), have instructed workers to comply with Musk’s request. However, other departments, such as Defense, Homeland Security, Education, and Commerce, have told their employees not to respond. The Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) initially asked employees to comply but later reversed its stance while it figured out how best to address Musk’s directive.
Despite being ordered to cease work, workers at the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) also received Musk’s email.
Musk, the world’s richest person, has been overseeing a massive downsizing effort, cutting over 20,000 workers and offering buyouts to another 75,000 across the US government’s vast civil service, which employs 2.3 million people. These cuts have affected employees in critical sectors, including nuclear weapons oversight and public health responses.

Meanwhile, the Trump administration recently announced the firing of 1,600 workers at the US Agency for International Development (USAID), placing most remaining employees on leave, further disrupting global humanitarian relief operations.
The unprecedented job losses have left workers struggling with financial insecurity. Charles Farinella, a fired IRS agent, expressed his uncertainty about health insurance and financial stability, saying, “I might have to sell my house because I don’t have a severance or anything.”
Musk’s cuts have also impacted companies working with the government. Chemonics, a company partnered with USAID, reported furloughing 750 employees due to the disruptions.
Musk’s Budget Slashing and Impact on the Economy
Musk’s aim to slash $1 trillion from the government’s $6.7 trillion budget has sparked controversy, with some Republicans supporting the effort while others face backlash from voters. Musk has emphasized cutting waste and fraud from programs like Social Security and Medicare, claiming it could improve services and increase benefits. He has also suggested that there is potential to eliminate up to $521 billion annually in improper payments, according to the Government Accountability Office.

While Musk’s efforts align with Trump’s push to reduce the size of government, the approach has sparked criticism from opposition Democrats, who argue it undermines Congress’s control over government spending.
