President Donald Trump announced on Tuesday, February 18, 2025, that he had ordered the dismissal of all US attorneys appointed by Joe Biden.
President Trump shared the decision on Truth Social, stating, “Over the past four years, the Department of Justice has been politicized like never before.”
Trump wrote, “I have instructed the termination of ALL remaining ‘Biden Era’ US Attorneys.” He aims to “clean house” and restore trust in the justice system. “America’s Golden Age must have a fair Justice System – THAT BEGINS TODAY!” he added. Replacing US attorneys is a common move for new presidents.
The country has 93 US attorneys serving 94 federal court districts. Each acts as the top federal law enforcement officer in their area. Several Biden appointees resigned after Trump’s November 2024 election win, expecting replacements.

Trump has long criticized the Justice Department for allegedly targeting him unfairly. Since taking office, he has overseen major changes. For example, high-ranking officials, including some from special counsel Jack Smith’s office, have been fired or reassigned. Smith’s team led two now-dropped cases against Trump.
