During Monday’s hearing in Donald Trump’s hush money trial, presiding Judge Juan M. Merchan imposed a $1,000 fine on Trump and cautioned about possible jail time for further gag order breaches.
McConney detailed the company’s handling of payments to prevent potentially embarrassing stories during the 2016 presidential campaign. According to Manhattan prosecutors, these payments were improperly logged as legal expenses, breaching the law.
This testimony arose as the landmark trial, marking the first criminal case against a former U.S. president, entered its third week. Unlike the vivid narrative provided by former Trump aide Hope Hicks last Friday, McConney offered a more technical but crucial account. He discussed the organizational efforts to conceal these transactions during a critical phase of Trump’s campaign.
Additionally, Judge Merchan underscored the importance of compliance with the court’s gag order. He warned that further violations could lead to incarceration despite Trump being a former and potentially future president. Merchan described potential jail time as a “last resort.”
The hearing also revisited Trump’s recent comments in an interview with Real America’s Voice, which critiqued the jury selection process and claimed bias, further complicating the proceedings.
Testimony resumed with McConney recalling discussions with Allen Weisselberg, former Trump Organization finance chief, about reimbursing Michael Cohen. Cohen, Trump’s ex-lawyer, had paid $130,000 to silence a porn actor claiming a past sexual encounter with Trump.
Weisselberg’s instructions were clear as he pushed a notepad toward McConney for note-taking. These notes later correlated with a bank statement in court, showing payments made to Cohen’s lawyer. McConney’s notes outlined a payment plan totalling $420,000 to Cohen, covering the base amount and additional sums for taxes and bonuses.
The trial continues to unveil the mechanisms behind these payments, with Trump’s direct involvement indicated by payments from his account. McConney highlighted the logistical challenges of managing these payments once Trump assumed the presidency.
The unfolding testimony sets the stage for Michael Cohen’s appearance, which is anticipated to be a focal point of the trial. Cohen’s forthcoming testimony is expected to face intense scrutiny from defence attorneys aiming to challenge his reliability.
