US President Donald Trump has initiated a process to designate certain Muslim Brotherhood chapters as terrorist organisations. This move could lead to significant sanctions against one of the Arab world’s oldest and most influential movements.

President Trump signed an executive order on Monday. The order directs top cabinet officials to investigate and, if warranted, designate specific chapters.

The order targets chapters in countries like Lebanon, Egypt, and Jordan. It gives officials 45 days to move forward with any designations after submitting their report.

The Trump administration accuses these factions of supporting violent attacks. The allegations include encouraging attacks against Israel and US partners in the region.

Officials also claim the groups provide material support to Hamas. A White House fact sheet stated the move confronts a “transnational network” that fuels terrorism.

This effort aligns with a long-held goal of many Republicans. Right-wing voices have consistently advocated for a terrorist designation for the Brotherhood. President Trump mounted a similar effort during his first term in office. The initiative has now been formally revived at the federal level.

Last week, Texas Governor Greg Abbott imposed the same designation at the state level. This highlights the political support for the action. The Muslim Brotherhood was founded in Egypt in the 1920s. It has since become a major, though often secretive, player across many Muslim-majority nations.
