“Toy Story 5” box office sales reached $312 million worldwide in its opening weekend, giving Pixar and Disney the year’s biggest debut, according to studio estimates Sunday.
The fifth “Toy Story” film earned $160 million in domestic ticket sales. That total set a new franchise record and topped the $120 million domestic debut of “Toy Story 4” in 2019.
International markets added $152 million during the same opening weekend. The result confirmed “Toy Story 5” as one of Disney’s strongest animated launches.
The “Toy Story” franchise had already grossed more than $3 billion before the new sequel opened. The Walt Disney Co. has also generated billions more in related merchandise sales.
The film cost $250 million to make before marketing. It brings back Tom Hanks as Woody, Tim Allen as Buzz Lightyear and Joan Cusack as Jessie.
Pixar veteran Andrew Stanton directed the sequel. Stanton previously directed “Finding Nemo” in 2003 and “WALL-E” in 2008.
The story follows the toys as Bonnie gets a new tablet. “Toy Story 5” also features Taylor Swift’s new song “I Knew It, I Knew You.”

Audiences gave the film an “A” CinemaScore, while the reviews as very good. Among animated films, only “Incredibles 2” opened higher in 2018, with $182.7 million.
Steven Spielberg’s “Disclosure Day” fell to second place with $17 million in its second weekend. Universal Pictures’ sci-fi thriller has grossed $160.4 million globally after two weeks.
