The Super Bowl ranks as one of the most significant events in the sports calendar, captivating millions of viewers globally. Renowned not only for determining the NFL season’s champion, this event also serves as a cultural spectacle, particularly through its iconic halftime show, which draws top musical talent, creating memorable performances that resonate worldwide.
Moreover, the tradition of performing the United States national anthem, “The Star-Spangled Banner,” has been a staple since the inaugural game in 1967. Initially, the anthem featured performances mainly by university bands and choirs, with the Washington National Symphony Orchestra gracing the third Super Bowl in 1969 at Miami’s old Orange Bowl.
Over the decades, a diverse array of artists, including Diana Ross, Neil Diamond, Billy Joel, Natalie Cole, Cher, the Backstreet Boys, Beyoncé, Carrie Underwood, Alicia Keys, and Lady Gaga, have lent their voices to this solemn pre-game moment. However, Whitney Houston’s rendition at Super Bowl XXV in 1991 remains unparalleled, particularly as it coincided with a tense period during the Gulf War. Her performance with the Florida Orchestra is celebrated as one of the most memorable in Super Bowl history.
