Smartphone users, both iPhone and Android, will soon enjoy global connectivity, thanks to Elon Musk’s Starlink technology.
This innovative service uses a satellite network orbiting Earth, allowing calls without traditional cell towers. Starlink enables calls on regular smartphones, significantly enhancing global communication.
The FCC has approved SpaceX, the entity behind Starlink, to link T-Mobile users in the US in areas lacking cellular coverage. Tests confirm compatibility with leading mobile brands like Apple, Samsung, and Google.
Trials have shown effective connectivity outdoors and inside urban buildings. Starlink also plans to support older smartphones, broadening accessibility and benefiting those in emergencies or regions without internet and cellular services.
Traditional satellite services using a distant geostationary satellite face high latency issues that hinder real-time streaming. Starlink’s proximity and numerous satellites ensure efficient global coverage and streaming for smartphones and computers.
While beneficial, including helping Ukrainian soldiers operate drones, Starlink has faced criticism from astronomers for impacting stargazing. Dutch astronomers, including Professor Jessica Dempsey, have voiced concerns over satellite emissions obscuring the cosmos, with launches reducing sky visibility.
