Sonakshi Sinha believes she can create magic on screen with the right roles and directors. She expressed this sentiment during a recent interview with PTI, discussing her acting career and the significant roles shaping her trajectory.
“I’m just looking for parts that truly challenge me and help me reach my potential,” Sinha stated, reflecting on her deliberate shift nearly a decade ago to seek more impactful roles. This shift has led her to notable projects like “Dahaad” and “Heeramandi: The Diamond Bazaar.”
In “Dahaad,” she portrayed a tough small-town cop under the direction of Reema Kagti, earning critical acclaim. Her role as the vengeful Fareedan in Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s “Heeramandi,” set in pre-Partition Lahore, has been particularly praised. Handling the dual roles of mother-daughter Rihanna and Fareedan in the Netflix series was challenging, but Bhansali’s faith in her capabilities helped her succeed.
“If you give me the right roles and right directors, I can do magic,” Sinha remarked, crediting directors like Kagti, Vikramaditya Motwane (“Lootera”), and A.R. Murugadoss (“Akira”) for recognizing her versatility.
Since her debut in “Dabangg” opposite Salman Khan in 2010, Sinha has evolved significantly as an actress. She has actively chosen films with female leads, enjoying the creative satisfaction they bring, regardless of their commercial success.
Recently, Sinha praised the film Crew, led by actresses Tabu, Kareena Kapoor Khan, and Kriti Sanon, for its compelling portrayal of strong women. This reflects a positive shift in the industry towards women-led narratives.
Sinha’s aspirations include working with renowned directors like Imtiaz Ali, Rajkumar Hirani, and others who could cast her in various roles, from a police officer to a courtesan, demonstrating her range and commitment to diverse characters.
She also mentioned her upcoming projects, including the horror-comedy “Kakuda” and a thriller by her brother Kussh Sinha, highlighting her openness to collaborate with established and new directors to bring visionary storytelling to life.
Through her career, Sonakshi Sinha has learned to focus on the positives despite varied audience reactions, embracing the diverse opportunities to grow and redefine her presence in Indian cinema.
