Claiming that in Karachi alone as many as 12,000 alleged terrorists have been held so far, Sindh information minister Sharjeel Inam Memon Thursday regretted that justice system was not keeping up with the law enforcement agencies.
“Though thousands of terror suspects, mostly belonging to outlawed outfits, were booked in the ongoing Karachi operation, but their trials, convictions, sentencing, etc are hitting snags,” Memon told.
To a question, he said Pakistan People’s Party leadership had supported the proposal of special military trial courts after giving it second and even third thoughts.
“Our leadership mooted the proposal inside out before coming up with a consensus support for it as it was a matter of serious concern. We decided to go ahead with it in the broader interest of the nation,” the provincial information minister said.
Furthermore, he also vowed to reclaim all the public property especially green belts from the illegal squatters in the coastal city.
“I will personally see the encroachments like unlawful marriage halls and restaurants are razed to the ground,” he said adding Sindh government was striving to undo the “incompetency” of the provincial regimes of the past.
“I know it for a fact that at least 18 town administrators in the metropolis are involved in letting large swathes of government land fall in the hands of illegal occupiers,” Memon alleged.
