The territorial dispute involving the New Islamabad International Airport, which overlaps the jurisdictions of Islamabad, Rawalpindi, and Attock, has been settled.
Situated within three districts, the New Islamabad International Airport is the federal capital’s first greenfield airport. Legal complications emerged post-inauguration due to the airport’s location across multiple district boundaries.
Initially, the airport’s terminal building, runway, and other facilities were temporarily managed by the New Airport Police Station in Attock. The district administration later escalated the matter to the Punjab government for a lasting resolution.
The Punjab Cabinet’s Standing Committee on Law and Order subsequently passed a resolution to rectify the boundary issue. The Home Department communicated the decision to various officials, including the Chief Secretary, the Commissioner and Rawalpindi RPO, Attock DC, DPO, and the Chief of Police.
The notification detailed that areas such as the runway, ASF colony, parking, main terminal, and the funnel area, along with up to 3km of surrounding territories—including places like Murat, Jangal, Thatti Gujran, Kanyal, and Mahlo—will now be officially part of the airport precinct.
These regions were previously under the jurisdiction of the New Airport Police Station, Attock, but will now fall under the Naseerabad Police Station, Rawalpindi. Following the Cabinet Committee’s approval, the Governor of Punjab will officially notify and enforce the decision.
