“Ragtime” enters the Ragtime Tony Awards race as a front-runner for best musical revival, with major nominations for its Broadway cast and creative team.
The revival faces competition from “Cats: The Jellicle Ball” and “The Rocky Horror Show.” The production also earned nominations for its three lead performers. Featured performers Nichelle Lewis and Ben Levi Ross also received nods.
Joshua Henry plays Coalhouse Walker Jr., a celebrated Black pianist in Harlem. Caissie Levy plays Mother, the matriarch of a wealthy white family outside New York City.
Brandon Uranowitz plays Tateh, a Jewish immigrant artist whose story follows a journey from hardship to reinvention.
Director Lear deBessonet also received a Tony nomination. She said some audience members have asked whether the team rewrote the script because its themes feel current.

The text has not changed. Instead, deBessonet said audiences are hearing its lines about race, immigration and American identity differently.
“Ragtime” first lost the best new musical Tony Award to “The Lion King,” but it won best original score, best book and best orchestrations.
The current Broadway run concludes on Aug. 2. A 2027 tour will bring the revival to more US cities.
