In an unexpected turn of events, Jamaat-e-Islami’s (JI) Hafiz Naeem Ur Rehman has received the backing of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) in his bid for the mayoral position in Karachi. PTI has accused the dominant Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) of election meddling, claiming the party is orchestrating the abduction of elected PTI representatives via the Sindh Police.
Under Imran Khan’s leadership, PTI argues that the PPP is desperate to secure the mayoral position following several evasions of municipal elections. The party is advocating for a transparent election process, alleging that the PPP and MQM reject public vote results.
This latest shift in dynamics has bolstered Hafiz Naeem’s prospects of winning the mayoral race. Nevertheless, there’s still a degree of uncertainty surrounding the outcome.
Despite PPP winning the most seats in the recent Karachi local government elections, it lacks the simple majority required for the mayoral position. Even with the backing of allies Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam (JUI) and Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N), they still fall short of the necessary votes.
Current seat tallies show the PPP leading with 98 seats, trailed by JI with 89 and PTI with 42, none of which hold a simple majority. Though the prospect of presenting the next Karachi mayor is high, alliances are crucial as a party needs at least 124 seats to guarantee a mayoral election victory.
Upon the completion of municipal elections, reserved seats will be allocated, increasing the number of Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC) members to 367. These include seats for women, youth, laborers, minorities, differently-abled people, and transgender persons.
After reserving reserved seats, PPP will hold a projected 144 seats. The JI is predicted to secure 121 seats, while the PTI and PML-N are expected to obtain 20 and 2 reserved seats, respectively. Other parties, including the JUI, Tehreek-e-Labbaik Pakistan (TLP), and an independent candidate, are each expected to secure fewer seats.
