Pakistan’s ranking on the Transparency International Corruption Perceptions Index (CPI) improved under the Pakistan Democratic Movement (PDM)-led government in 2023. This progress indicates a reduction in corruption during Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif’s tenure, compared to Imran Khan’s 2018-2022 rule.

Transparency International’s analysis reveals a rising trend in corruption since 2018. The 2022 CPI report highlighted increased corruption under the shared governance of Shehbaz and Imran, which contradicts Imran Khan’s anti-corruption pledge.

2023 Report Shows Positive Trends

The 2023 TI report ranks Pakistan 133 out of 180 countries, with a score increase from 27 to 29. This improvement signifies a seven-position jump from the 2022 ranking.

Released: Tl has released flagship Corruption Perception Index 2023. In CPI 2023 #Pakistan score has improved by 2 points from 27 in 2022 to 29 in CPI 2023 and rank has improved by 7 positions from 140 in CPI 2022 to 133 in CPI 2023. Details: https://t.co/3WRCY9Oq8L pic.twitter.com/iBVuCYs7aP

Pakistan benefits from strong judicial oversight despite challenges like debt and political instability. The Supreme Court’s expansion of citizens’ right to information under Article 19A is a notable step.

The PML-N party reacted positively, crediting the Sharif government for curbing corruption. Justice (retd) Zia Perwez of Transparency International Pakistan finds the improvement encouraging. He attributes this to government policies and law enforcement efforts.

Transparency International calls for independent, well-resourced justice systems. They emphasize the need for laws and procedures to protect justice institutions and target corruption.

After 4 years of 𝘂𝘁𝘁𝗲𝗿 𝗰𝗼𝗿𝗿𝘂𝗽𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝘂𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗿 𝗜𝗺𝗿𝗮𝗻 𝗞𝗵𝗮𝗻's rule, Pakistan managed to curb this nuisance in the country when @CMShehbaz became the Prime Minister. This has been confirmed in Transparency International's report. pic.twitter.com/x5ldeQYAKn
