Pakistani consumers may experience an increase in their electricity tariffs, with a proposed rate hike of Rs 3.49 per unit due to a Fuel Charge Adjustment (FCA) for April 2024
The Central Power Purchasing Agency (CPPA), representing power distribution companies (DISCOs), has formally petitioned the National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA) to authorize this tariff hike.
In response to this request, the National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA) has scheduled a public hearing on May 30, 2024, to deliberate on the proposed rate increase. If approved, the new tariffs will be reflected in consumers’ electricity bills starting in June.
The CPPA’s application detailed the energy sources for April, noting that no electricity was produced using furnace oil or diesel. Instead, 22.96 percent of electricity was generated from hydropower, and 10.19 percent came from local coal sources. Domestic gas was a significant contributor, accounting for 24.97 percent of electricity production, with imported LNG supplying another 11.28 percent. Additionally, 23.64 percent of the power was sourced from nuclear energy during the month.
