OpenAI is reportedly considering entering the robotics industry by developing humanoid robots, a potential expansion of its AI software stack.

The company has shown interest in robotics by investing in startups like Figure AI, 1X Technologies, and Physical Intelligence.

Humanoid Robots in OpenAI’s Vision

According to The Information, OpenAI has discussed creating human-like robots. While details remain unclear, this move signals the company’s renewed focus on robotics after abandoning its robotics division in 2021. The division was shut down due to insufficient training data to reach the desired intelligence levels.

Recent reports suggest that OpenAI might re-enter the field, especially after job listings emerged for research engineers to develop robotics capabilities. The postings highlight training multimodal large language models to unlock new abilities for partner robots.

These partnerships could be pivotal in OpenAI’s future robotics projects, providing the groundwork for advanced applications.

OpenAI’s recently launched o3 series AI models, designed for advanced reasoning, may form the foundation for humanoid robots capable of performing diverse real-world tasks. These robots could revolutionize settings like factories by executing complex operations through simple verbal commands.
