Inter Miami CF said Messi hamstring fatigue was diagnosed after Lionel Messi underwent medical tests following his early exit from a 6-4 win over Philadelphia Union.
The Major League Soccer club said the initial diagnosis showed overload linked to muscle fatigue in Messi’s left hamstring. Inter Miami did not give a return date, saying his comeback would depend on clinical and functional progress.
Messi left Sunday’s match in the 73rd minute after grabbing the back of his left leg and asking to come off. The 38-year-old walked to the locker room without obvious difficulty.
The update comes less than three weeks before the FIFA World Cup 2026 begins on June 11 in the United States, Canada and Mexico. Argentina open their title defence against Algeria in Kansas City on June 16.
Messi has managed his workload since joining Inter Miami in 2023. The club has often rested him during congested fixture periods, while MLS has now started its World Cup break.
Messi has not formally confirmed whether he will play in the tournament, though he is widely expected to return for what would be a record-equalling sixth World Cup appearance.
